Graduate Student Commencement Information


Commencement 2017 for all Graduate Students
(PhD, Master's Degrees, and Teaching Credentials)
will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 6pm on the Pierce Lawn. 
The information below is intended for advanced degree candidates only.

 

Required Procedures for Graduate Students

1. Notify the Graduate Division of your Intent to Participate - due March 27, 2017

PhD Students: PhD Notice of Intent to Participate in Commencement

Required for all PhD students who wish to walk in the commencement ceremony and plan to graduate Spring or Summer 2017.  If you don't wish to walk in the ceremony, this form is not required to graduate.  If you graduated in Fall 2016 or will graduate in Winter 2017, this form is not required and you can skip to step 3.

Master's Students: Master's Application for Candidacy - for Spring and Summer 2017

Required for all master's students, or PhD students who wish to receive the master's degree, in Spring or Summer 2017. Students who wish to walk in the commencement ceremony must submit the application for candidacy by this deadline.  If you graduated in Fall 2016 or will graduate in Winter 2017, this form has already been submitted and you do not need to submit it again.

2. Submit the Online Graduation Application (R'Web) - due April 24, 2017 (Spring 2017)

In order for the degree to be conferred, all students must file a grad app on R'Web by the Monday of week 4 of the quarter they wish to graduate.  The spring 2017 deadline for grad apps is April 24, 2017.  Check the Graduation Procedures site for other grad app deadlines.

3. Confirm your participation via the commencement web site - starting April 13 at 8am through April 27 at 5pm

All students who wish to participate in the commencement ceremony must confirm their participation on the commencement website during the time period of Thursday, April 13 at 8am through Thursday, April 27 at 5pm. Students will only be able to log on if they are eligible. Eligibility is determined by the Graduate Division. Students must submit the required forms (listed above) before their eligibility can be determined.

Additional Information

  • Participation in the Ceremony
    All Advanced Degree and Credential candidates will participate in one Graduate Division Ceremony on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 6pm on the Pierce Lawn. Check the commencement website for a schedule of other ceremonies.
  • PhD Students Walking in Ceremony with Master's Degree
    PhD students who wish to walk for their master's degree may do so. Please submit the Application for Candidacy by March 27, 2017 (for Spring 2017 or Summer 2017 master's candidates).
  • PhD Regalia
    PhD candidates wishing to purchase a custom blue UC doctoral gown, tam and hood may do so through the UCR Campus Store (951-827-4454) by Friday, April 28, 2017.  Purchase prices are as follows:  blue UC PhD Gown - $759.00; UC PhD Hood - $165.00; Blue Velvet Tam - $133.00; UCR Tartan Tam - $150.00; Class of 2017 Tassel: $7.98. (All prices listed are subject to change.)

    PhD candidates preferring to rent a traditional black doctoral gown, hood, mortarboard and tassel may do so at Grad Fair, Tuesday, April 25-Thursday April 27, 2017. Following Grad Fair, PhD regalia may be rented at the UCR Campus Store until June 1, 2017. Rental price is as follows:  black PhD gown - $42.98; PhD hood - $38.98; mortarboard  - $4.98.  (All prices listed are subject to change.)
  • Master's Degree Regalia
    Master's regalia may be purchased at Grad Fair, Tuesday, April 25-Thursday April 27, 2017. Following Grad Fair, PhD regalia may be rented at the UCR Campus Store.  Prices are as follows:  Master’s gown, cap and tassel package - $58.98; Master’s hood - $36.98. (All prices listed are subject to change.)
  • PhD Hooding
    All PhD students will be hooded at the ceremony. Typically the major professor (dissertation/thesis committee chairperson) will hood the candidate. If that person is unavailable, another member of the committee may substitute.  It is THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY to confirm participation with the hooding professor.  Faculty must then register on the commencement web site by Thursday, May 25, 2017.
  • Faculty Participants Hooding a Degree Candidate
    All hooding faculty must register on the commencement website. If a faculty member does not have their own regalia, they must request it in a timely manner through the commencement website.  The deadline for faculty to register and order regalia is Thursday, May 25, 2017.
  • Tickets
    To ensure adequate seating all ceremonies will be ticketed.  The actual number of guest tickets available to each candidate will depend upon the number of candidates attending the ceremony.  At this time the planned allotment is eight (8) tickets per graduate for the Graduate Division ceremony.  Students confirming their Intent to Participate by the deadline will have the opportunity to order the full allotment of guest tickets and also make a request for additional tickets. Tickets will be distributed at Grad Fair, April 25-27, 2017.  Check the commencement web site for Grad Fair times and details.

  • Live Online Streaming
    The ceremony will be streamed live via the UCR website.  Family and friends who are not able to attend the ceremony in person can watch it online.

Commencement Student Speaker


We will be selecting a student speaker for commencement.  If you are interested in delivering a 3 minute speech at the ceremony, please send a transcript of your speech to trina.elerts@ucr.edu by March 3, 2017.  Selected finalists will be asked to deliver the speech by audition and a final decision will be made by April 3, 2017. 

Watkins Commencement Award

The Dr. Gordon and Anna Watkins Award was established in 1956 by the student body to honor UCR’s First Provost and his wife.  It is presented to a graduating Master’s Degree or Doctoral student for outstanding campus and/or community service. A cumulative GPA of 3.5 is required at the time of application. A lifetime membership in the UCR Alumni Association and a $500 gift will be presented. 

The Watkins Award Application should be submitted via email to kara.oswood@ucr.edu or turned in to Graduate Academic Affairs, 140 University Office Building by March 17, 2017.  Self-nominations are acceptable.

Previous winners were Jessica Tsai Wen (PhD in Bioengineering), Tanya Rawal (MA in Comparative Literature), Thanh Dinh (PhD in Botany) and Colin Blake (MBA). A more complete list can be found on the Watkins Award page.

1.  Contact Trina Elerts (trina.elerts@ucr.edu) by March 27, 2017 in order to be included on the eligibility list.

Spring 2017

Students graduating Fall 2017 are NOT eligible to participate in the June 2017 ceremony.  Please plan to join us in June 2018.
